Heart Healthy Senior Recipe: Apple Banana Oatmeal

There’s nothing better than starting your morning out right with a hot, nourishing breakfast. Being able to get that breakfast made in less time than it takes the coffee to brew is an added bonus, especially for family caregivers!

To help spread awareness about American Heart Month, we’re using this February blog to share a favorite recipe here at Greenwich Home Care Assistance: Apple Banana Oatmeal. This recipe is perfect for seniors who want a quick and easy breakfast with minimal mess in the kitchen. Oatmeal is a nutritional powerhouse, renowned for its high fiber and unique antioxidants. Study after study continues to show that people who eat the most fiber have the lowest risks of coronary heart disease and cardiovascular disease.

Ingredients

½ cup quick-cooking oats
1 Tablespoon ground flaxseed
1 egg
½ cup milk
⅓ of a banana, mashed
¼ teaspoon cinnamon
½ of an apple, chopped
2 teaspoons honey

Preparation

Using a fork, stir the oats, flaxseed, egg and milk in a mug. Then stir in the mashed banana, cinnamon, apple and honey until all of the ingredients are combined. Pop the mug right into the microwave, and let it cook for 2-3 minutes until piping hot. Fluff up with a fork and enjoy.

For an added treat, try topping the baked oatmeal with a drizzle of yogurt, a sprinkle of nuts or a dollop of nut butter.

Benefits for Seniors

The high fiber in this dish is great for heart health. Apples lower cholesterol and inflammation. Bananas contain potassium, Vitamin B6, and Vitamin C, all of which supports the functions of the heart. The egg provides a healthy source of protein, and flaxseed is great for seniors because it improves digestive health and lowers bad cholesterol. Be sure to buy ground flaxseed, or else grind it yourself in a coffee grinder, since whole flax seeds may pass through the body undigested, negating any of the health benefits.
